What is happening inside the slab.
Worth understanding, because it explains every exception.
Concrete does not dry out. It cures — cement and water react chemically, and that reaction keeps producing strength for as long as there is moisture available for it. A slab that loses its water too early stops gaining strength, which is why curing is something a crew manages rather than something that simply happens.
The strength curve is steep at first and then flattens. By seven days a normal mix has reached roughly 70 percent of its design strength, which Concrete Network gives as the point at which ordinary vehicles are safe. The remaining 30 percent arrives over the following three weeks, and 28 days is simply the age at which the trade takes the measurement — not the day the concrete stops improving. Concrete continues to gain strength, slowly, for years.
The seven-day rule is about cars. Heavy or concentrated loads are a different question, because they do not spread their weight the way four tires do. That is the 28-day category, and the reason for it is not caution for its own sake: a point load on a young slab leaves damage that cannot be undone later.
The local part nobody writes about.
Most cure-time articles are written for nowhere in particular. Here is what actually changes around Lake Norman.
Heat is the enemy, not the ally. It is intuitive that a hot day speeds curing up, and it does speed setting up — which is a different thing and usually a problem. A surface that sets before the crew has finished working it cannot be finished properly, and a slab that loses its surface water to sun and wind stops curing at the top while the body of it is still going. Concrete Network's own guidance names weather and mix design as the two largest influences on curing.
Humidity is, counter-intuitively, on your side. Curing needs moisture available at the surface. Humid air slows the rate at which a fresh slab gives its water up to the atmosphere. A muggy North Carolina morning is a better curing environment than a dry, breezy one at the same temperature — and it is wind, as much as heat, that pulls water out of a surface.
Which is why summer pours start early. Placing in the early morning, before the sun is on the slab and while the air still holds its overnight moisture, is the standard hot-weather answer. It gives the crew workable material for finishing and it gives the surface its best chance of keeping the water it needs.
And why winter is a real season here. Concrete Network notes that concrete cures best above 50°F. The Piedmont's problem is not one long deep freeze but repeated shallow freeze–thaw cycling, and a slab that has not gained enough strength before it meets that cycling is a slab with a surface problem in the spring.
